Behind the invitation
Apple's invitation for September 9, 2024, arrived on August 26 with the line It's Glowtime and a glowing Apple logo. Greg Joswiak added We're glowing with excitement! The glow matched the new Siri animation Apple had shown at WWDC24, a band of light around the edges of the screen, and made it clear that the new iPhones would be sold on Apple Intelligence.
What Apple showed
Apple began with Apple Watch and AirPods:
- Apple Watch Series 10 was the thinnest Apple Watch yet, with a larger wide-angle OLED display, faster charging and sleep apnea notifications, starting at $399.
- AirPods 4 came in two versions for the first time, with Active Noise Cancellation on the more expensive one, at $129 and $179.
- AirPods Pro 2 gained hearing health features, including a hearing test and a hearing aid mode for mild to moderate hearing loss. The FDA authorized it three days after the event, the first over-the-counter hearing aid software of its kind.
Then iPhone. All four models used the new A18 chips and added Camera Control, a new button on the side that responds to presses and swipes to open the camera, zoom and adjust settings.
- iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus gained the Action button, a vertical camera layout for spatial video and a new ultra wide camera with macro, at $799 and $899.
- iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max grew to 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, the largest on any iPhone at the time, with a 48MP ultra wide camera and 4K video at 120 frames per second, from $999 and $1,199.
The reaction, then and now
The awkward part was timing. Apple sold the iPhone 16 lineup as "built for Apple Intelligence," but none of those features were available when the phones went on sale on September 20. The first ones arrived in October with iOS 18.1, and the personal Siri features were delayed into 2026. Camera Control also drew mixed reviews.
The hearing aid feature, on the other hand, was widely praised. It's Glowtime is a reminder of how much of Apple's 2024 rested on a promise. The next year's iPhone 17 lineup changed the design far more. See the full iPhone timeline.
